Comment on how Harper Lee uses the events and characters of chapter eight to reveal more of life in the small town of Maycomb. In chapter nine, why is Scout fighting? Why is Atticus defending Tom Robinson?

Task 3: Prediction: In Chapter Nine, Atticus tells his brother Jack, “you know what’s going to happen as well as I do, Jack, and I hope and pray I can get Jem and Scout through it without bitterness, and most of all without catching Maycomb’s usual disease.” Comment on what you think he means.
Task 4: Journal Response: In Chapter Nine the use of the N-Word becomes more frequent. What is your reaction when you come across the N-Word in a piece of literature? For example, can you describe your feelings about how Harper Lee has used the N-Word so far in To Kill a Mockingbird?
